Marburg virus disease in Tanzania
The Tanzania Ministry of Health reported 15 confirmed Marburg virus disease (MVD) cases and two deaths in Biharamulo district, Kagera Region since 19 January 2025. The World Health Organization and other agencies are supporting outbreak control measures in the region. A travel advisory has been issued for local and international travellers visiting the Kagera region including online surveillance forms and temperature checks on departure. On 20 January 2025, Tanzania confirmed an outbreak of Marburg virus disease (MVD) in the Biharamulo and Muleba districts of Kagera. A single case has been laboratory confirmed with a further 25 suspected cases testing negative. The World Health Organization are supporting outbreak measures in the region. Suspected Marburg virus disease in Tanzania
On 13 January 2025, an outbreak of suspected Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) was reported in the Kagera region of Tanzania. As of 11 January 2025, nine suspected cases including eight deaths were reported across two districts, Biharamulo and Muleba. Laboratory results are pending.
