Diphtheria in Australia

On 18 May 2026, the Australia Centre for Disease Control reported an increase in the number of diphtheria cases across Australia, with a total of 221 confirmed cases reported in 2026. Ebola disease in DRC

As of 24 May 2026, a total of 101 confirmed and over 900 suspected Ebola disease cases, with ten confirmed and 220 suspected deaths, have now been reported from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on Ebola disease.

On 25 May 2026, two additional confirmed cases of Ebola disease among healthcare workers were reported in Uganda. This brings the total number of reported cases in Uganda to seven, including one confirmed death. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on Ebola disease.

Hantavirus - cruise ship

On 22 May 2026, the World Health Organization reported an Andes hantavirus case in a crew member of the MV Hondius cruise ship. The case had disembarked in Tenerife, was repatriated to the Netherlands and had been isolating since then. As of 22 May 2026, 12 confirmed cases and three deaths had been reported as part of the outbreak. On 25 May 2026, the Ministry of Health in Spain reported a new confirmed hantavirus case in an individual remaining in quarantine in Spain.
